Pentagon officials, particularly Feith's office, have reportedly opposed the deal, which had been favored by the State Department, because of the possibility that the group, the Mujahadeen Khalq, might be useful in putting pressure on Tehran.

According to received reports, the article which was published in Al-Vatan newspaper, and in which it was claimed that Mohammed Khatami has sent letter to Powel in order to encourage him to renew talks between two countries, had been sent to this paper by Mojahedin.
By this, Mojahedin wanted to show to Americans, especially those who had said MKO members could be exchanged with Al-Qaeda members, that MKO members are very important for Iran and that the U.S. can get more advantages from Iran.
Also, they have tried to convince that Iran wants to deepen its influence in Iraq so that this can instigate White House to re-arm Mojahedin again.
Rajavi, in a meeting with intelligence officials of the group, has said: "now, we should teach the Americans that how much we are important for Iran in order to prevent the U.S. from exchanging or extradition and then we should step toward Americans".
