Time reported that American forces take the threats from forces loyal to Saddam as serious. A senior intelligence official told TIME that the U.S. believes its forces are also under threat from Mujahidin-e Khalq, a militant Iranian group that operates in southern Iraq opposed to the government in Tehran. "That will be an important thing to watch," says the official. "They've been generously supplied and supported by the [Iraqi] regime." SanFrancisco Chronicle also reports: Rounding out the Iraqi forces in the north, local Iraqis say, are several hundred fighters of the Mujahedeen Khalq, or National Council of Resistance, a particularly ferocious militia consisting of Iranians funded by the Hussein regime to fight some of Iraq's most vicious battles in the 1980-89 Iran-Iraq war. Baztab reported that: Saddam has ordered Mojahedin-e kahlq to suppress public uprisings in several points in Iraq. Mojahedin forces are divided to the groups of 100 to 200 persons and are settled in Basra, Baghdad and Shiite regions in order to encounter and suppress uprisings. Another part of Mojahedin has been settled in Salamieh base near Mosol along with the 5th army of Iraq
