AFP interviewed a number of former members of MKO whom call it a cult. Karim Haggi, one of the former members and formerly the head of Maryam Rajavi's private guards, said: "Mojahedin are anything except democrat. Rajavis act in a way as if they're the representatives of God on the ground. They don't bear any criticisms." He added: "Rajavis forced members to divorce their mates." Mohammed Hussein Sobhani, former member of MKO's central council, said: "their purpose was not to let mates to talk about their feelings and thoughts or support each other. MKO leaders used physical punishments to control members." Karim Haggi said: "when I was in Paris I was in a house that had no communication devices. I was not allowed to learn French." Another one said: "an organization which orders its members to set themselves to fire in protest to the arrest of the group's leader (and we know that self-immolations were ordered by organization) is potentially very dangerous".
