Mojahedin with their opportunist nature, sought shelter in the gap between Iran and the west so that they may have a third phase and find a way to survive; but there was a difference: they had no plan for this phase but they were well aware that they should find another Saddam in order to guarantee their existence, and since then onwards, they are looking for westerners to define a new strategy for them.
After the revolution of 1979, PMOI ordered all its members and supporters to get a minimum by appeasing for the regime: in this phase, known as political phase, it was the duty of all forces to continue the way of revolution, along with the leader and strategy of the regime, and against the imperialism.
Two years were enough for Massoud Rajavi to understand that he and his organization have no popular base and that regime leaders are not going to the share the power with them; so, they referred to the second phase, known as “military phase”, by terror and bombings, which fully adapted with it. The peak of the MKO’s military actions were conducted from Iraq, where they were supported by Saddam Hussein.
Military phase continued, with ups and downs influenced by Iran’s behavior toward Iraq during the war. During this period, terrorist organization of Mojahedin-e Khalq changed its tactic times and again from “city war” to border war and vice versa. And according to their own official announcement they killed thousands of Iranian civilians, and since they were under the obligation of Saddam, their existence was tied to that of him. They proved they are mercenary of Iraqi regime by fighting against Kurds in north and suppressing Shiites in south.
Then, dictatorial regime of Saddam Hussein was ousted in 2003, thus MKO’s military phase was stopped. There’s no doubt that the organization, which acted under the authority of Saddam Hussein and enjoyed Iraqi regime’s funds, logistics and intelligence, acted in accordance with their ambitions. After the fall of the regime, MKO saw itself in an inevitable bankruptcy.
Entering the third phase
But this, perhaps, is not the end of the road. They have no sensitivity or expectations, in terms of history, records or even identity. Their goal is merely to stay at the current phase until a new way is opened! Hence, they pretend in their internal relations that “We should deceive imperialism, get on its difference with the Mullah’s regime and buy time for ourselves!”
Political analysts call the third phase “Prostitution Phase” and believe that the organization is in the hands of the west, even as a small leverage against Tehran. During past two years, since the fall of Saddam, prostitution phase has been forming so that former CIA officer Ray McGovern says:
“They are ready to work for us. Previously, we considered them as terrorist organization. And they exactly are. But they are now our terrorists and we now don’t hesitate to send them there to Iran."
"These are terrorists, but there is a big difference being my terrorists or yours.”
Karen Kwiatkowski, ex Pentagon official: “For years, pentagon has tried to lift MKO’s name from the terrorist list and to recognize it as resistance force. For the war planners, they are the “born allied” ones, trained in sabotage technology, and disciplined.”
"MKO is ready to do things for which we would be ashamed, and over which we try to be silent. But for such tasks we exactly use them."
Pat long, ex civil servant of Pentagon secret service: “They are again in the business. This time not beside Saddam Hussein, but at the side of the US; Always useful, always a puppet in the hands of powers.”
The only problem for westerners to employ Mojahedin officially is only related to this fact that they’re on terror list and consider this as an obstacle, though soluble, for the public opinion. It’s not without reason that US vice president says: “We shouldn’t have put MKO on terror list hurriedly.”
Prostitution phase for Mojahedin-e khalq is achievable and this is the promise of MKO’s ideological leader (who has gone into silence since the fall of Saddam). In his last message, in April 2004, he ran forward and said:
“Up to now, Mojahedin was accused of being the puppet of Iraqi regime, and regarding that, they asked the resistance to be labeled as terrorist. Now that Iraq is under the control of American forces, what would they say? They will probably say that we are mercenaries of the US.”
Mojahedin are not afraid of being called “mercenaries”, because they have nothing to lose! The reason is that they have lost everything before! And those who employ mercenaries have taken shameful steps before, and this is nothing in comparison with them!
